Roof Repair Solutions

We usually don’t think about our roofs until there is a problem. When there is a problem, like a leak, it can become a very serious issue. Damaging your treasured, irreplaceable items within your home, leaks may seem like a minor issue, however, if left unrepaired, they can become major problems over time.

This is why it’s very important to address repair issues to your roof and get them fixed before they become major problems. To help you with making sure this doesn’t happen, we have come up with this helpful list of roof repair solutions.

Diagnosing the Problem

Your first step needs to be determining what the problem is. You will need to decide whether it makes sense to repair the roof, or if you will wind up needing to replace the whole thing. Here are some issues to watch for while making your inspection.

If he roof is sound, for the most part, with only one or two weak spots caused by a falling branch or something else during a bad storm, then you can go ahead and make the repairs and call it good.

If the roof is showing signs of normal wear all over, then patching the different areas is only going to be a short term fix. You will still wind up replacing the whole roof in the near future.

If you are planning on having the whole roof replaced, but can’t get to it for another week or so, you can get away with covering the areas that are leaking with plywood or plastic to keep it from leaking further.

If you will need to wait a year or so to replace your roof, you will need to go ahead and replace the damaged shingles now and keep an eye on it after heavy rainfalls to make sure it isn’t leaking anywhere else or worse.

Faulty Flashing

In many cases of a leaking roof, the problem isn’t with your roof at all but with your flashing. Flashing is placed on your roof to protect the joints located between the chimney and the roof.

If this has been a problem for some time, repairs can be difficult. It’s not uncommon for a roofer to make a few attempts before fixing the problem for good. However, in some cases the problem may be obvious if the flashing is rusted through or has noticeable damage.

Replacing Shingles

Even if only part of a shingle is missing, you need to replace the whole shingle. It’s a great idea to save a few shingles after a new roof is put on your home for future repair needs.

If a shingle is curling up at the edges, there is no need to replace it, you can just glue the curling edge down. With a caulking gun, apply a dab of roofing sealant under the corner. Weigh down the curled edge with a brick, which you will want to leave in place for 24 hours.

In the event of a cracked shingle, instead of replacing it, place a bead of roofing sealant under the crack. Press the shingle down and then add another bead of sealant over the top of the crack. Spread the sealant evenly with a putty knife and let it dry.

A damaged roof can be very serious, however, repairing it, in a lot of cases, can be simple. So next time you have a leak, give these tips a try. Hopefully, it works for you.
